Eggplant or Aubergine
Eggplant is another vegetable which is a little tricky to grow. Purple in colour and having the appearance of an egg, the eggplant is popular in dishes such as ratatuey. Eggplant or oberseme as it is also called can also be fried and salted and is very popular in vegetarian dishes.
Growing Eggplant
Growing an eggplant is fairly straight forward, although it is quite a seasonal plant, meaning that your crop can vary from year to year. It requires sun, but some shade and good water. If the leaves start to turn yellow, you know that it is lacking in nutrients and you will need to apply some fertiliser or mulch. The eggplant pictured here is the long thin variety, however the standard type does have egg shaped fruit.
