Project Vegetable Patch

From patchy lawn to thriving vegetable garden

Of course it is great to read about what to do, but nothing speaks as clearly as an example project in a typical Aussie garden. Here we have installed a great vegetable patch where some patchy dry lawn used to be.

Removing the Grass

Removing Grass

This task presents some serious hard yakka. The process of removing over a dozen square meters of tough lawn is not an easy one, but with a little attitude we cleared all the grass in an afternoon.

Tip: to make this step easier, try covering the grass for a few weeks with some tin/carpet/newspaper. This will kill the grass and make it much easier to churn over the soil.

Installing the Irrigation

Getting enough water to your plants is absolutely vital to promote growth. There are several options here, and we will look at a few in the project:

  • A sprinkler is a simple but wasteful option as water will usually spill out over the edges of the bed. You can purchase a flow regulating hose or device which restricts the water pressure to a specified amount regardless of the water pressure - this will limit spill off when the water preasure is higher.
  • A dripping hose is another option which will save a significant amount of water providing droplets directly to the soil with reduced evaporation losses.
  • Reticulation is a complicated option, however will allow you to direct water exactly where it is needed. Small quarter circle, half circle and full circle jet sprays can get you good coverage whilst drippers can be positioned using feeder hoses directly at the larger plants (like tomoato plants for example).
