Tomatoes

How to grow the most popular vegetable!

Growing Tomato Plants

Tomatoes are the most commonly grown vegetable at home. They can be grown most of the year round and are fairly resilient to hot weather when watered well. There are a number of different varieties, and you can even get some different shapes and colours. They can be grown in large veggie patches, and in pots.

Maintaining Tomato Plants

Although maintaining the plants is fairly straight forward, staking your tomato plants is really important. It will not only encourage plant growth, but will keep the fruit off the ground and away from as many bugs as possible. A white powder can be added to the tomatoes when the fruit is ripening to keep bugs away, although be sure to follow the directions on the packet about harvesting a couple of days after applying. Lastly keep your smokers and cigarette buds well away from tomato plants as they really can't handle it.

Eating Tomatoes

Tomatoes can be enjoyed in salads, sandwiches, omelets, pastas and a bunch of other tasty dishes. If you grow your own tomatoes they are guaranteed to taste that bit nicer than the artificially ripened ones from the shops!
